How it's made

Same berry. Two ways to make it.

Here's what the difference actually is, and why we think it's the only part worth arguing about.

Fresh-pressed elderberry juice being bottled

The two ways

Our way
Our way

We start with fresh organic elderberries from Missouri farms and press them, the way you'd press a juice. That first-press juice is then brewed with whole organic spices: Ceylon cinnamon, whole clove, raw ginger. Nothing is reconstituted, and it goes into glass rather than plastic. The payoff is the mouthfeel. It tastes like fruit, because it started as fruit.

The common way
The common way

Most elderberry syrup starts with whole dried berries, usually bought from a long way away. Nobody can tell you how old they are or how long they traveled, so age and oxidation are unknowns. The berries are cooked in a lot of water with powdered spices, and everything is strained. Some are called "local" because the honey is. The berries usually aren't.

Everything that's in it

Turn the bottle around and the whole list fits in a breath.

  • First-press elderberry juice
  • Filtered water
  • Raw honey
  • Organic ginger
  • Organic Ceylon cinnamon
  • Organic whole cloves
  • Organic lemon juice

No gums, no fillers, nothing added to make it pour nicer. The honey and the lemon are the reason kids will take it without a standoff.

Why we're this particular about it

A United States Pharmacopeia (USP) study of commercially available elderberry supplements found that 46% of finished elderberry dietary supplements were found to be completely adulterated.

That isn't an accusation about anyone in particular. It's just a good reason to ask where a bottle actually came from, and you shouldn't need a lab to find out.

Grown in Missouri, made in small batches

Our berries come from Missouri growers: real rows, real people, a real harvest window in late summer. They're pressed rather than dried, so what ends up in the glass started as fruit and stayed that way.
